Contemporary Interior Design
With three bedrooms, a floor area of 883 sqft, and no store room and utility room, this tiny home in Singapore posed a unique challenge. Therefore, the interior design concept was meticulously crafted to meet the storage and lifestyle needs of a couple, their two teenagers and a dog. An abundance of sleek customised space-saving storage solutions strikes the perfect balance between comfort and style. A well-planned lighting strategy not only enhances the design features but also provides illumination that supports their daily routines, showcasing the practicality of the space.

The spatial experience begins upon stepping into the home. The customised storage units were chamfered to make it more comfortable to move around here. The customised solutions at the entrance also serve as a dry pantry with power points for small appliances. Instead of a ceiling fan, the family intended to put a standing fan for the dining area. A full wall of storage solutions was conceptualised with a compartment fronted by wood slats to house the standing fan and provide storage space. With the dining and living areas sharing one space, the aim was to keep furnishings streamlined for an uncluttered look.

The children’s room is designed with their comfort and personalisation in mind. Here, customised bunk beds with niches at one side of the wardrobe fulfil individual comfort. The layout was also reconfigured to create a spacious feel upon entering. Strategically, the bunk beds beside the windows and mirror panels on the wardrobe and the base of the bed create an illusion of a larger floor area. A comprehensive interior design approach with a carefully planned lighting strategy ensures that the room is bright, catering to their daily activities and needs.

Symmetry, a fundamental design principle for harmony, is integral to bedroom design. It pleases the mind and senses, a necessary sleep prelude. The L-shaped windows of the master bedroom, however, challenged the creation of symmetry. A feature wall with timber strips and an extended headboard that makes the bed area symmetrical are the expert touches that introduce balance. The dark marble headboard also injects contrast, grounding the bedroom design to create a restful environment. Dark accents ensure consistency with the rest of the interior design.

With working from home a part of life, many families now require a work-from-home space – a challenge for small homes in Singapore. As the children share one room, the spare bedroom has been converted into a study and piano room. More storage solutions are also incorporated here to meet their overall storage needs, with dedicated space for the ironing board, luggage, and other miscellaneous items. Like the other bedrooms, cove lighting complements the ceiling fan in white for an understated feel. Instead of a table lamp, cove lighting serves as task lighting, reducing clutter on the desk.
