Modern Coastal Interior Design

For a family of four and their helper, this five-bedroom strata landed residential property offers the perfect space for living well. Inspired by far-flung places, the landed home takes on a modern coastal interior design style. Soothing blue walls whisk you away to the Mediterranean, making the home a sanctuary where the family members can feel recharged. Other design elements make this home a unique space for growing together.

As with most terrace houses, light and air flow can be obstructed. Therefore, the wall between the living area and stairs was removed to improve light and ventilation. This design decision enhances the spatial flow, aligning with the modern coastal style. With the wall removed, full-height timber strips were added to the corner to provide privacy for those moving on the stairs. These strips also accentuate the volume of the space. The TV feature wall and low console stretch across the wall, making the living area appear more expansive.

With the dining area located next to the dry kitchen, it made perfect sense to allocate storage solutions to the wall behind the sofa. Effective storage planning means weighing needs and wants. While some might want full-height storage solutions to maximise space, a sideboard fits the family’s storage needs and accentuates this home’s easy breezy coastal feel. A customised dining bench serves as additional storage space without visually cluttering the area. Beams and pendant lights were added to lower the ceiling, creating an intimate dining ambience.

Dry kitchens can be designed in several ways, whether with an island or peninsula, depending on the space. With a narrow space to work with, a peninsula was built to house the wine chiller, coffee machine and dry stores. Light grey patterned tiles add interest without overwhelming the space.

Part of the homeowners’ brief was to incorporate their existing world map. The oversized world map was turned into a triptych, its beauty enhanced by the contrasting wall colour. This family area is also equipped with open bookshelves and cabinets for other items. Like the dining area, spotlights add dimension to the wall.

With the children still young, one bedroom was converted into a playroom. A customised daybed does double duty with storage space underneath. Loose furniture was chosen for storing toys and books so that the furnishings can be changed in the future to accommodate their new needs. Window treatments are necessary to create the look and feel of a space, and these fabric Roman blinds give this room a relaxed feel.

The master bedroom’s understated style is enhanced by its colour palette and soft textures, creating a relaxing ambience. The ceiling feature, with beams in woodgrain laminates, mirrors the warm wood flooring for a warm and restful feel.
